A team of young people from The Prince’s Trust Catterick Garrison have successfully designed and built a drone assault course for Risedale School to use as part of their inter-house competition programme of activities.
On Thursday 10th June, three members of The Prince’s Trust Catterick Team officially handed-over the completed drone assault to Risedale’s Headteacher Colin Scott, House System Coordinator Aidan Hindhaugh and Director of Facilities Gill Morrissey.
Team member Jess Charlesworth began the hand-over presentation by talking the Risedale staff through the course and the various obstacles and apparatus they had created. The team have been working on the drone project for about a month, along with all the other activities and workshops that take place during a young persons’ placement at The Prince’s Trust.
Jess explained that the team designed the course to be portable, suitable for different skill sets and adaptable for time trials and inter-house competitions.
“We really wanted the drone assault course to be something that everyone could use and enjoy. We were really pleased that we were able to make all the apparatus out of upcycled and repurposed materials so it was environmentally friendly too.”
Risedale’s House System Coordinator, Aidan Hindhaugh said: “The drone assault course is absolutely amazing! I’m in no doubt that our pupils will love using the apparatus and I’m sure it will become a regular feature of our inter-house competition programme.”
The Catterick Prince's Trust Team is based at Risedale School's Youth Centre and delivers 12 week team courses to young people aged 16-25 yrs.
Jess commented that being part of The Prince’s Trust team had really helped her with her confidence. “Before I came here I couldn’t really speak to anyone but working as a team has really helped me with this.”
James said: “The time I’ve had at The Prince's Trust has really helped me so stay focussed and positive before I move onto the next phase in my Army career.”
Kieren said: ”I was anxious about joining the team and meeting new people but I’ve really surprised myself. It’s been good fun and like being part of an extended family.”
Risedale Headteacher Colin Scott said: “We’re so pleased to be back and actively working with The Prince’s Trust again. The opportunities that the organisation and its staff provide for young people are essential and really echo the supportive and compassionate ethos that we nurture here at school; we are Team Risedale and together we are A Family of Learners.”
